Originally from Shenzhen, China, Yuxuan Lin (b.2003) is an NYC-based composer who is intensely interested in the possibilities of combining visual art, dance, and music, and enjoys any opportunity to collaborate. As a musician, Lin began playing the piano at age six and later studied both folk and classical guitar, as well as the Chinese traditional instruments erhu and hulusi. She began her composition studies with Reiko Füting following in the footsteps of her grandfather, a self-taught composer focusing on Chinese folk music. Some of Lin’s other former mentors include Robert Beaser, Kelin Wang and Colton Francis.
Lin is the winner of the 2024 Verdehr Trio Composition Commission Prize. Her music has been published in the music collection entitled New Voices in Art Song-2023 by North Star Music LLC, and has been performed at various venues such as the Tokyo to New York: ‘Moments in This Time’ Benefit Concert for Covid-19 Musicians Relief, La Schola Cantorum in Paris, the Young Artist Program at Yellow Barn in Putney, VT, and at The Juilliard School, among others.
Currently studying under Pulitzer laureate Melinda Wagner at The Juilliard School where she is pursuing a bachelor of music in composition, Lin consistently draws inspiration from neurological diversity among artists as a creative resource.
Three Miniatures
Composed December 2023 – Violin, Viola, Cello
From the composer: “It has come to my attention that there’s not many string trio repertoires as that for string quartet. The absence of a 2nd violin makes the ensemble much smaller, not the most comfortable to do four-part harmony anymore. With three melodic instruments, what textures and sounds would I be able to create? Through the string trio, I hope to explore the sonic possibility. As someone deeply fascinated by the essence of lights, I aim to create both individuality and unity of lights in the work through limiting one dominating performance technique in individual movements. The work is of importance to me as a composer for the reason that it contains interesting textures that depicts specific types of lights: a significant source of my inspiration.“
