Tyler Guzmán, clarinet

A Coloradan by birth but a Texan by choice, Tyler Guzmán is a versatile clarinetist, educator, and arts advocate in the San Antonio, TX area. Through his multi-faceted career, Tyler continues to enrich the cultural landscapes of San Antonio and beyond, inspiring audiences and students alike with his passion for music and education.

 

Tyler’s dedication to education is evident in his thriving private studio, where he has had the privilege to mentor students who have achieved success in competitions, All-State ensembles, and collegiate music programs. He frequently collaborates with local schools, offering masterclasses and sectional coaching throughout the San Antonio area. Tyler take pride in his past work as a band director in Arizona and in the San Antonio Independent School District, where he was recognized for developing comprehensive programs that emphasized musical excellence, the value of collaboration within ensembles, and cultivating an appreciation for the arts.


As a performer, Tyler is known for his expressive artistry and commitment to both classical repertoire and contemporary works. He has performed staples such as von Weber’s Concerto for Clarinet no. 2 with the Colorado Mesa Symphony Orchestra and Mozart’s Concerto for Clarinet in A major, K. 622 with the Four Seasons Orchestra in Scottsdale, AZ. His passion for new music has led him to premiere compositions by several notable composers. One of Tyler’s favorite being Miguel del Águila, whose Transoceánica Tyler premiered at the International Clarinet Association’s ClarinetFest 2019, as well as del Águila’s Silence for clarinet and orchestra, which was premiered in 2022 by Tyler here in San Antonio.


In addition to his solo and orchestral endeavors, Tyler is an active chamber musician. He is a performer and board member for the Prickly Pear Clarinet Ensemble, a local non-profit that is slated to premiere Five Dances for Five Clarinets for clarinet choir at the ICA’s ClarinetFest 2025 in Fort Worth, TX. He also performs with River City Winds, a local trio committed to bringing classical, contemporary, and popular music to the varied audiences of the San Antonio area. Tyler is a frequent performer in the Symphony of the Hills orchestra in Kerrville, TX and the Heart of Texas Concert Band, where he presented Mendelssohn’s Konzertstück No. 1, op. 113 alongside his husband, fellow clarinetist Shaun Guzmán.


Tyler completed his doctoral coursework at Arizona State University–where he also earned his Master of Music degree–under the guidance of Robert Spring and Joshua Gardner. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Colorado Mesa University, having studied with Adam Ballif, Stephen Page, and Jun Watabe. Other teachers include Thomas Hess and Debbie Wilson.
