Four Sketches

Composed August 2017 – Clarinet, Violin, Cello, Piano

From the composer: “Each movement of Four Sketches evokes musical scenes that develop through interactions of contrasting moods. The first sketch, Mirages, explore stylistic expectation with moments of clarity clashing with dense polyphonic textures. Chant is the second sketch and features a microtonally altered melody interrupted by rowdy interjections by the violin and piano. Depths, the third sketch, provides a brief moment of repose with delicate interplay between each quartet member before the high energy release of the final sketch, Festival. Every motif throughout the piece is derived from subsets of diatonic scales which are sketched onto complex rhythmic and melodic figures.
